From the tiered streets of Spyglass Hill, the drive down San Joaquin Hills Road to Roger's Gardens takes about four minutes. The Poppy Avenue trailhead into Buck Gully sits roughly the same distance in the opposite direction. Crystal Cove's Historic District is a straight shot down PCH. Almost every worthwhile late-summer event in Corona del Mar happens inside that eight-minute radius, and the residents who use it well never sit in the visitor traffic that clogs Marguerite after ten in the morning.
This post is not a roundup. It is a claim: the August calendar around Spyglass Hill rewards residents who understand timing, not access. The events are public. The advantage is that you can be home in ten minutes.
The Poppy Avenue move most neighbors skip
Buck Gully Reserve backs directly to the ridgeline Spyglass Hill sits on. Most residents drive past the reserve for years without walking it. The traditional trailhead is at 872 Poppy Avenue in Corona del Mar, and the practical mechanics matter more than the mileage. Buck Gully Trail is considered a moderate hike that covers 5.1 mi, with an elevation gain of 508 ft, and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete.
Two facts change how you plan the walk. First, as of October 2019, this trail is now one way, uphill only for cyclists, which means you never see a mountain bike coming downhill at speed. Second, there are three bridges on this hike, and four bridges in the Buck Gully Reserve, and the aluminum bridges were all helicoptered in when the trail was built. The bridges are the natural turnaround markers if you are not up for the full out and back.
The residents' advantage is temperature. The canyon holds shade well into mid-morning, and the Poppy Avenue side sits low enough that the marine layer often lingers past nine. Weekend visitors show up at ten. If you leave Spyglass Hill at 6:45, you are back in your kitchen before the parking pressure starts.
One caveat worth stating: dogs are not allowed on this trail. Bring the dog to Inspiration Point instead.
A midday anchor at Sherman Gardens
Often described as a hidden gem, Sherman Library & Gardens is located at 2647 E. Coast Hwy., Corona del Mar, roughly a mile from the Spyglass Hill gates. In August the gardens run two overlapping summer programs. The first is the Dog Days of Sherman art exhibition. The second is the children's workshop series inside the grounds themselves, including Adventurous Artists on 08/04/2026 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Sherman Gardens, 2647 East Coast Highway, for 8 to 10 year olds.
For residents with grandchildren visiting from out of town, the workshop schedule is the quiet solution to the "what do we do with the kids on a hot Tuesday" question. You drop off, walk to Bandera or CdM Restaurant for a proper adult breakfast on East Coast Highway, and pick up before noon.
The Baroque Music Festival, which uses Sherman Gardens as one of its home venues, ended its 2026 season in late June. The concerts are not an August option this year, but the venue partnership is worth knowing about for planning next summer's calendar: the festival's partnerships with Sherman Library & Gardens, St Michael and All Angels Episcopal Corona del Mar, and St Mark Presbyterian Newport Beach have run since the first Festival in 1981.

Where Chef Rich Mead's anniversary dinner fits
The single most interesting private event on the local August calendar is at Roger's Gardens. The Friends of Farmhouse 10th Anniversary Dinner, hosted by Owner and Executive Chef Rich Mead, is a one-night-only event featuring an exceptional five-course menu with curated pairings, created in collaboration with guest chefs Cathy McKnight, Paddy Glennon, Paul Buchanon and Shachi Mehra, local farmers Alex Weiser, Peter Shaner and Troy Regier, and additional artisans and purveyors, within the garden setting of Roger's Gardens; proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
Two things about this dinner reward residents in particular. It is a Thursday, which means the traffic on San Joaquin Hills Road is not what it would be on a Friday. And the walk from the Spyglass Hill gates down to the Roger's parking lot is under fifteen minutes if you feel like leaving the car home entirely. If you do go by car, Roger's has two small lots and parking can be tricky. Arrive at 5:30, not 6.
For a lower-key visit any other week, Farmhouse is at 2301 San Joaquin Hills Rd., Corona del Mar, 949.640.1415, open daily 11:30 AM to 9 PM. The lunch service is the local secret. Same kitchen, same garden setting, roughly a third of the dinner check.
Two evenings worth blocking
Crystal Cove Conservancy is running its Movies on the Beach series this summer with a single August date. On August 6 at the Historic District Beach between Cottage #1 and Cottage #13, the program is free with no registration required; as the sun sets, Crystal Cove State Park's beach transforms into an open-air theater under the stars. Guests are invited to bring blankets and low-back beach chairs for a memorable evening of film, fresh popcorn, and family-friendly educational activities before the show.
The mechanic that matters here: park at Los Trancos, take the shuttle down, and walk the Historic District an hour before showtime. If you time it right, you can grab a date shake at the Crystal Cove Shake Shack, which has slaked coastal thirst since the 1940s, once the Date Shack famed for its creamy date shakes made with local fruit, before the crowd arrives.
The second evening worth blocking is closer to home. The residents' rule for August in Corona del Mar: everything worth doing happens either before 10 am or after 6 pm. The middle of the day belongs to the visitors, the parking meters, and the marine layer that has already burned off.
The village table, post-8 PM
The CdM Village has a specific rhythm on summer weeknights. The lunch surge and the early dinner families clear out around 7:30, and the room quiets down. This is when the residents' bar seats open up.
Five Crowns, a beautiful replica of one of England's oldest country inns in Corona del Mar, has been a dining legend since 1965. In 2009, three generations of the Frank family refurbished, restyled and re-opened the traditional British pub at Five Crowns as Corona del Mar's first and only English-style gastropub, SideDoor. SideDoor's back room after 8:30 on a Wednesday is one of the most comfortable seats in the village.
For a shorter walk from your car, Foretti's CDM established itself as a highlight of the Newport Beach dining scene when it opened in 2013, and is now operating under the ownership of longtime Restaurateur and Level 1 Sommelier Thaddeus Foret, continuing to prepare its signature recipes. The wine program is the reason to sit at the bar.
CDM Restaurant at 2325 E Coast Hwy stays open Wednesday and Thursday until 10:00 pm and Friday and Saturday until 11:00 pm, which is later than most of the block. If your Candlelight concert at Pelican Hill ends at 7:15, you have a proper sit-down window before the kitchen closes.
